Read John 1:40-42. It’s easy to get sidetracked into thinking that only the most popular, powerful or prestigious do the great works of God. In reality it is just normal every day people working behind the scenes that do much to build the kingdom of God. In this passage we get a small glimpse into the disciple Andrew, who being Peter’s brother most likely lived in Peter’s shadow. However, without Andrew, Peter would have never met Jesus and never been The Rock on which the church was built.
- How do you think Andrew felt always living in the shadow of Peter?
- Describe a time or situation in your life that you felt over-looked or underappreciated.
The first thing we learn from Andrew is that he was a person of humility. Not only did he immediately bring Peter to meet Christ but basically stepped back and let Peter become the main leader of Jesus’ disciples. Being humble leads us to have the right attitude and the right priorities in serving Christ. It’s not ‘what’s in it for me’ or ‘how can I be in the spotlight,’ but about serving God and building the kingdom in whatever way God calls us.
- Have you ever served God or the church with selfish motives? Explain.
- Who first saw potential in you and what you could accomplish for Kingdom of God?
Read John 6:8-9 & Luke 18:27. The second thing we learn about Andrew is that he was a possibility thinker. When the disciples were faced with the dilemma of feeding the multitude it was Andrew who found and brought the boy with the 5 loaves and 2 fish to Jesus. He seemed to understand that nothing was too hard for Jesus and it was his behind the scenes faith in action that led to one of the greatest miracles in the gospels.
- Do you look at life’s struggles through the eyes of positive possibilities or hindering obstacles?
- Andrew believed that nothing was too hard for Jesus. Describe a time you trusted in the limitlessness of God.
Read John 12:20-22. Not only was Andrew a possibility thinker he was a people connector. It’s interesting that in this story, Philip didn’t turn to Peter, James or John but to Andrew. He obviously knew that Andrew’s gifts and goals were to connect people to Jesus. Not many of us are great speakers, teachers, or theologians but all of us have been called to connect people to the true light of the world, Jesus Christ. As everyday missionaries we need to become like Andrew, looking for ways we can bring those around us to Jesus who will bring them life, love and peace we know ourselves.
- Have you ever been a link in connecting someone to Christ or their God-given purpose? What happened?
- Just as Andrew consistently connected people to Jesus, how can you become a better Christ connector to those around you?
- Who can you connect to Christ this week/month/year?
