Read John 4:7-26. Just as Jesus offered the woman at the well “living water,” we too are called to take this living water to the world around us. Often, going on mission trips or serving others in mission and ministry is somewhat intimidating or scary. But it’s when we put ourselves in these situations that God is able to work through us as well as in us.
- Describe a time you took a daunting plunge in your life? What was good about the experience? Why was it frightening to you?
- Have you ever been changed by a mission trip or by serving others? Explain.
Read John 10:10. The first thing we learn about Jesus’ living water is that we need to keep connected to it if we really want to begin helping others find Christ as well. In fact, Jesus came to give us an abundant and full life, so that we too can share this living water with others.
- Would you describe your life as full? Why or why not?
- Jesus came to give us an abundant life here on earth. How full or empty has your life been up to the present?
Even though we are called to share this abundant life with others we often create nice comfortable lives, trying to entertain ourselves instead of moving out in God’s behalf. We were made to move! We are wired to take hold of the life of adventure that God has called us to fulfill by connecting others to Jesus Christ in many way and in many places.
- Name some ways you have created a nice comfortable safe place to live instead of living out the sometimes scary yet adventurous life God has called you to live?
- Have you ever been on an adventure with God? Explain.
Read Psalm 34:8, 36:9, & 107:9. To really take hold of this courageous life God is calling us to have, we must initially check our own ‘living water’ supply. Without Christ’s life and love in our lives we will dry up, burn out, and not be affective in reaching out to others. God is the one who satisfies, not things of this world and we must constantly seek and stay in God’s presence to keep ourselves filled with joy, peace and grace.
- What is the level of your own supply of living water today? How do you keep your supply of “living water” from running dry?
- Name a way you tried to quench your spiritual thirst with something that wasn’t nearly as satisfying as you’d hoped.
Read Matthew 28:18-20. Secondly we must take the plunge into serving others both here and in the world. The church often is seen as a boring, confining place that offers no excitement or adventure. But we all are a part of God’s great army, signing up for God’s great mission. It is not a place for comfort zone seekers but for risk taking plungers. Will you take the mission plunge today?
- What ‘mission plunge’ is God calling you to take today?
- What will you do to begin working toward taking that plunge?
