Fresh Air: the Holy Spirit and who?Sunday, Mar 30 2008

Even when we are unaware, God’s Spirit leads us at all times to fulfill God’s purpose in our lives.

John 3:1-10
Wendy Deichmann Edwards

You probably think you have a good idea why you come to worship celebrations each week but do you know for sure it is truly your idea or desire?  Maybe the real reason is that the Spirit of God has called you and is constantly drawing you to come, to lead you in fulfilling God’s ultimate purposed for you life.  The Spirit of God is persistently and purposely after you, leading you forward to bless you by blessing others around you.

  • Why do you specifically come to worship celebration each week?

  • How do you see or feel God’s Spirit working in your life right now?

Read John 3:1-2.  This passage of dialogue between Nicodemus and Jesus is fascinating in many ways, and the first noticeable aspect is that Nicodemus was both secure and insecure in his meeting with Jesus.  As a leader in the community, Nicodemus knew that Jesus was fast becoming an influential person by his teachings and miraculous works.  But he also knew that Jesus was beginning to look more and more like a threat to the establishment and status quo, and Nicodemus had to know more about him.  This might also be the status you are feeling in your relationship with Jesus.  His call on your life will often push you out of your comfort zone into a realm of faith, dependence, and trust in him.

  • Do you like life as relatively calm keeping the status quo or do you like more adventure and risks?

  • Are you too comfortable with your life right now?  Explain.

  • Has God ever pushed you to give up a life plan or goal to do something more radical?

Read John 3:3-10.  The second fascinating thing is that Jesus confronts Nicodemus with his lack of knowledge about God and God’s Spirit at work in life.  Nicodemus had major status as a religious leader but Jesus wanted him to realize that he didn’t truly know God or know how God worked in the world by God’s Spirit.  In fact you also will never know ahead of time the whole plans of God for your life because if you did there would be no need to trust God.  God’s purposes for you life requires trust in God, because without trust there is no faith.

  • Does it frustrate you to not know what God is going to do in your life in the future?  Why or why not?

  • Describe a time you had to trust God in stepping out to do what God wanted you to do?

  • Do you pretty much have your life planned out?  Is it your plan or God’s plan?

One important question when trying to understand God’s movement in our lives is ‘how do I know if it’s my plan or God’s plan?’  This is an important question especially in a world that so easily distracts us or leads us down the wrong paths.  The best thing you can do to determine the Holy Spirit’s calling in your life is to do so within the life of the Church, Christ’s body.  Here you can find the nurturing community of faith that prays, studies the Scriptures, and is guided by wisdom and experience of others who have walked down this same path you are walking.  It is here that you will be able to determine God’s call together and stay faithful to the one who calls you.

  • How does your cell group to help you determine God’s will for your life?

  • What do you hear God’s Spirit calling you to do today to bless others?

  • Where do you need to begin trusting God’s leading in your life?
