A Faith That Works

Healthy eating and exercise matter, but can't prevent the second-hand pollutants that cause disease and distress. This world's moral and mental pollutants are just as dangerous! Yet, James calls us to lead unpolluted lives--healthy food for the mind, sobriety for the soul, and the focus on sacrificial service that fulfills God’s purpose.

James 1:27

Read James 1:27, I Corinthians 2:14 & Matthew 23:27. Just as you can work hard to be healthy but still suffer from effects of second-hand smoke or air pollution, you also need to work hard to stay spiritually healthy by keeping moral pollution from entering your life through your mind. To do so you must continually grow deeply in your relationship with Jesus as well as be on your guard against sacrificing real spirituality with artificial religion.

  • What tends to be artificial instead of real in your spiritual life right now? Why?
  • Have you ever tried to change a behavior or bad habit without getting to the root of the problem? What happened?

Read Acts 13:36. Moral pollution enters your mind mainly through your everyday life perspective. The first problem is living a 'me-centered' instead of 'God-centered' life. The goal of me-centered living is personal happiness and individual freedom, but this is based on the false premise that you can find meaning and happiness without God. Another life perspective that corrupts your mind is the diluting of truth and mingling ideas of partisan politics instead of making biblical priorities your priorities.

  • What do you most often do that is truly me-centered instead of God-centered? What about God-centered instead of me-centered?
  • Can you name a public policy from your favorite political party that comes directly against biblical priorities? Explain.

Two other corrupt life perspectives which pollute the mind are problem/negative focusing and living for today only.  When you live out of fear instead of living out of faith you don’t allow God to lead you through the wildernesses of life and you never enter the place of promise.  Equally, by focusing solely on the present instead of eternity, you will abandon your commitment to Christ when an opportunity comes along that meets an immediate need but is ultimately detrimental to your spiritual life and relationship with God.

  • What are some fears that hinder you from living out total faith in God's will/purpose for your life?
  • Which “pollutant”: me-centeredness, diluted partisan politics, problem/negative focus, or today priority living, do you struggle with the most? Explain.

Read Proverbs 1:10, Hebrews 12:1 & Proverbs 119:105. There are important preventative measures you need to take to keep yourself from compromising your integrity and keep your morals from being polluted. One is to continually remember and live with total commitment to Jesus Christ no matter what happens in your life. Secondly, you need to constantly keep watch on what you see and what you think. Thirdly you need to place yourself around fruitful Christian people who model, mentor and keep you accountable in your faith. And finally you must be disciplined and run to win this race of life you are in by reading & living the Word and serving as much as you can.

  • How do you remind yourself of your total commitment to Jesus Christ?
  • If you truly become what you think, what has been influencing your thoughts lately?
  • What steps do you take to prevent yourself from being "polluted" by the world? Are there other steps you need to take to maintain personal and spiritual integrity? Explain.
